First of all, Emancipation Radio is very honored to have you join our online family, To be able to do this is a complete blessing to me and like I said, "I've been trying to track you down for years.." Thanks for joining us.
Answer: Thx for having me. I am really honored.
Question:
How does it make you feel when you hear that your debut cd still brings from 150-200.00 range on ebay?
Answer: Yeah I know u told me that the other day and it is pretty astounding. Wish people would’ve bought it when it came out.
Question: Do you keep in touch with anyone from the Purple World anymore?
Answer: No not really. Occasionally I see Wendy, Lisa and Susannah. Somehow our worlds keep entwining. I also talk to Alan Leeds Wife Gwen, as she is my homegirl. Always has been and always will be. My first dose of NY was with her!!!! She found my apt here in the city. Real people.
Question:

Let's play a game, pretend it's the Twilight Zone, I pick you up in a "Little Red Corvette" and we go to a drive-in, Every time I say an era from your past, the images flash on the movie screen.. Let's Play.

  • Little Red Corvette
Answer:

Walking into Sunset Sound Recording Studios in my white backless, St Tropez type dress. It is dark outside and I am anticipating only good things.

Sneaking out of the house at 2am to go and record, sleeping in the car with Prince in my driveway.

Question:
  • Purple Rain
Answer:

Acting lessons in Mpls. Improvs. Revealing. I am always angry and emotional in an improv. My mom participated in one of them, since she has come to visit and check up on me.

Dancing classes. Jerome and I are partners and we were the star pupils!!!!

I wrecked my car in a snow storm.

Question:
  • The "Jill Jones" CD
Answer:
In NY. Alone. Electric Lady Land. Jimi Hendrix. Very separated from Mpls. No one is around. Starting over. Acting lessons.
Beautiful apartment. Me and my dogs, Koo Koo and Gertie. Prince was happy that I was there, learning to be not so sheltered.
Question:
  • Graffiti Bridge
Answer:

Coming back from France. Amazing clothes from Azzedine Alaia, whom I adored. The Panty scene was easy. New people around. Very business like. Sex scene was difficult. I have never watched the flick. Time of feeling independent. Protective. Alone. Mpls was more foreign to me than France at this time.

Met Spike Lee on the set and we became friends.

Question:
  • The "Two" CD
Answer:
In Chicago at my brother Chris Bruce’s house. Left NY felt relieved and safe. My mom had passed and I was a disaster. Life had become a blur. I felt that something guided me to sing those words. Something was protecting and looking out for me. It had to be said. So that I would begin to understand me.

Question:
  • Family Jamm
Answer:
Fun. Great to see everyone. Truth is it was just so familiar. Like being embraced again. The good and the bad. Like a family, pardon the pun.
Question: Moving on to today...
I found only a few online interviews with you and it's been quite a bit since you've done one, what can you share with the fans about what's life like for Jill Jones these days?
Answer: I still do my music. But I am not the kind of person that writes a the drop of a hat. I think it is more cathartic for me. Things happen, I write. I am a mother of a 14 ½ yr old daughter. And that has been the only thing I can say I have achieved…being selected to be someone’s mother…pretty amazing. The best compliment in the world. Gorgeous Wonder on the TWO album is about her.
Question:
What do you think about Internet radio? have you heard much of it? is it something you will use more in the future to help get your music to the people?
Answer: I love the Internet and all mediums. I think it is necessary. And it definitely breaks up the normal pablum that people have been fed. It gives everyone so many choices to find a home where they can relate.
Question: What can you tell us about your future musical projects?
Answer: I am going to do more things of course. I don’t have a deal, so I am doing everything on my own. I am working on completing this new album, which is going to be elctronic/dance per se. I am also working on a documentary that has nothing to do with music but is more on a political stance. I don’t know, whatever the universe pulls me to and wants to teach me.
Question:
"Jill Jones" was way ahead of it's time, "Two" was more rock-pop, what will be the flavor of this next cd? What style is the most you?
Answer:
The style that is most me would be …time and what naturally prevails. What is the most organic at the time. It doesn’t require perfect pitch, just honesty.
Question:
I ask this of everyone I interview, Jill Jones is teaching Musicology 101 at let's say.. NYU, what are some of the essential listening in the class?
Answer: Radiohead, Shostakovich, Nina Simone, Edith Piaf- Mon Dieu, French 60’s music, Nino Rota, James Brown, Miles Davis- Bitches Brew
Question:
Finally I just want to give you the chance to say anything you want about yourself or to the many fans that have always loved and followed you over the years
Answer: I am very grateful for the resurrection. Thank you.
Closing: and again, thank you Jill for joining us here on Emancipation Radio, We will continue to support you and let us know of anything we can do for you in the future..
